Assessment is an integral part of your university studies and usually consists of a combination of coursework and examinations, although this will vary from course to course - on some of our courses, assessment is entirely by coursework. Your CV should include details of your professional or professional-level experience of theatre not just of theatre directing and in addition should include details of any theatre directing experience you have had, whether at professional level or not. This should consist of your answers to each one of the following questions, which we have designed to provide us with additional information, both about your experience of and commitment to theatre and about your aims, interests and concerns as a director.

Your responses to these questions are considered to be significant and will be taken into account by selection panels in assessing your potential suitability for the course. Please note that each question should be answered in not more than words, but your answers can be shorter than this if you wish. We have designed them to allow you to reveal as frankly as possible your present views of theatre and of what your potential or possible work as a director might be. We will expect our applicants to reveal a wide range of experience, opinions, interests and ambitions.

This referee must be able to give an informed view of your professional or professional-level theatre experience in general, which may or may not include directing. You will prepare a thoroughly researched case study of the career path of either a director, playwright or theatre company. You will also be expected to produce a professional opportunities analysis, for which you will research and identify opportunities for your work once you have completed the course.

Working in a small tutorial group, you will be focusing on a number of plays, ranging from Greek drama to the present day. Along with conducting appropriate contextual research, you will be carrying out a literary analysis of form, style, structure, language and thematic ideas.

Each play will be examined in terms of the very specific challenges it poses in practical production. There will be two projects to complete — one purely analytical in terms of the relationships between language, character and narrative; and one theoretically practical in which a number of challenges are identified, along with a series of proposed practical solutions in production.

Your presentation and resultant peer exchange will form a significant part of the learning and early in the term a calendar of presentation dates will be agreed. Some changes may occur between now and the time that you study.
