I tried doing a custom battle on Very Hard difficulty and the AI still seems to be pretty competent, they certainly weren't the paste-eating generals of RTW2. I fixed my Steam version by deleting all the old preferences. However, the current Steam version refuses to play multiplayer with the disk version, so we can't do any family head-to-head after all.
